The Absolute Safari - September 28 - October 6

Nambia is a land of contrasts. One of the least populated nations in Africa, surrounded by the Kalahari Desert on the east to the Namib Desert on the west. In-between lies some of the most beautiful lands in all of southern Africa.

Spitkoppe
Lying in the middle of the desert landscape is a series of rock formations. It reminded me a lot of Valley of Fire, located outside of Las Vegas. We stopped overnight to camp among the rocks watching the sun go down. While others went hiking, I was content to stay in the shade and play cards.

Cape Cross Seal Colony
The next morning, we made our way west to the Skelton Coast. A long stretch of Atlantic Ocean coastline where early seafaring pioneers wound up shipwrecked.
The south Atlantic Ocean is also home to one of the largest seal colonies in the world. A breeding colony of over 200,000 Cape Fur Seals

Swakomund
We turned south and traveled along the Atlantic Coast to Swakopmund, a 19th century village first colonized by German Settlers and whose legacy still exists today. We settled in our hotel dorm rooms and planned our adventures for the next few days.

Living Desert Tour
Up early the next day several of us made our way to the Namib Desert to learn about the creatures that live under and crawl on the sand. We track chameleons, snakes, skinks, scorpions, lizards, geckos and other small creatures, and learned about the area’s desert ecology. https://livingdeserttours.com.na/

Quad Biking Namib Desert
It's certainly not me as I struggled to maintain this big red machine crossing sand dunes for two hours. I tried. I failed and never again. Dune 7 Adventures
"I feel the need. The need for speed"

Sandwich Harbor Jeep Ride
Sandwich Harbour is part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park and has become one of the most unique places in Namibia. This is where the massive sand dunes of the desert descend into the Atlantic Ocean. Thereby, creating some magnificent scenery. Driving through the sand dunes of the Namib Desert is a perfect way to experience this amazing place. It should look like this.
We were met with cloudy and foggy weather, and it looked like this. We made our way in 4X4 jeeps along the edge of the coast.

Sossusvlei, Deadvei and Dune 45
Eons ago, this area of southern Africa was a fertile grassland. The oceans dried up leaving petrified trees in its wake. Sossusvlei located in Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park is one of the most spectacular and best-known attractions in Southern Africa. The name Sossusvlei is often used to refer to a large area in the park including famous sites such as Dune 45, Deadvlei, Big Daddy, and Sesriem. The large red sand dunes in the park have always been high on many travels bucket list and the unreal landscape did not disappoint! Sossusvlei is a large, white salt and clay pan surrounded by massive red sand dunes, located in the Namib Desert.
